SCG, formerly known as SIMM Capital, traces its origins to 2006 when CEO and Founder Mat Simmons, after successfully exiting multiple businesses in manufacturing and other sectors—including ventures that generated 7-, 8-, and 9-figure outcomes and held multiple patents—transitioned into real estate investing. Starting from humble beginnings with single-family affordable housing (including hands-on experience in Section 8 properties), Mat weathered the 2008 financial crisis and subsequent market cycles, building a personal portfolio exceeding 300 residential units by 2014 while gaining deep insights into resilient, cash-flowing assets amid regulatory shifts like Dodd-Frank that opened doors for broader investor access.
This foundation led to the launch of TSG Partners Inc. in 2011 as a full-time venture into multifamily acquisitions, evolving into SIMM Capital to scale institutional-grade funds—with the first fully subscribed by 2015—and ultimately under the SIMMONS & Co. umbrella for vertical integration across management, development, and ancillary services. Driven by a vision to democratize real estate returns, create generational wealth for investors without the complexities of direct ownership, and address America’s affordable housing shortage through value-add strategies in underserved markets, the firm grew nationwide across 9+ states, managing over $418 million in AUM across 4,000+ units and 27+ projects.
